If you’re visiting Lima, you have to eat at either Maido or Central. Maido would be my choice if you had to choose between the two. Central was a whimsical experience, but Maido is where you appreciate each bite of food that goes into your mouth.
What is “Nikkei”?
Nikkei cuisine is the perfect balance between Japanese and Peruvian food. Nikkei originated from the late 1800s when Japanese workers immigrated to Peru and had to learn how to cook Peruvian.
You have the option of ordering a la carte or experiencing their 15-course tasting menu. I highly recommend journeying through their tasting menu. The dishes had ingredients from the Andean highlands, the Amazon jungle and the Pacific Ocean that were all tastefully incorporated with a Japanese twist.

Beef Short Rib cooked for 50 hours. This MELTS in your mouth.
Dim Sum – squid and sea snail cau cau. It sounds and looks odd, but was so tasty. The texture of the dish is complex — you have the softness from the cau cau and crunchiness from the toasted quinoa.
My absolute favorite dish were the nigiris. I know it’s so basic to say the nigiri was the best at a Japanese restaurant, but that fatty tuna with the egg on top was FIRE.
Be sure to make a reservation well in advance. I highly recommend dinnertime over lunch because the ambiance of the restaurant is beautiful at night. Come hungry and enjoy!
