A constant topic that comes up is how social media affects people’s views on their own lives. Everyone in the 21st century has some form of social media, and most of them probably have a hard time finding social media as a positive presence in their lives. Most of my readers know that I tend to take a lot of breaks on my public platforms. I’m well aware that this makes me seem unreliable to my subscribers and followers since, for the past few months, my engagement on my Instagram has been at an all-time low.

I’m not proud of it because I’ve worked really hard at building my little community. I do feel like I’ve let people down, but through the years, I’ve learned that my mental health comes first. For those who don’t know, I work in digital marketing full-time at a brand. My day-to-day is doing exactly what I do for my own blog — if not, more. So on one side, I get to do what I love as a career; on the flip side, I’m not motivated as much to update my personal accounts. To balance the two is something that I’m still working on because I am fucking proud of my blog and want to see it continue to thrive.

Since my full-time job takes so much of time, I have relationships with my boyfriend, family, and friends to maintain — which sometimes feel like I’m balancing on a thread. This created a challenge for me to maintain a healthy relationship with social media in the past, but I have trained myself to be pretty good at understanding any negative emotions when it comes up.


How can I maintain a good relationship with social media??

Nothing is What it Seems

Always remind yourself that online glasses are rosier than they are in reality. Everyone paints a positive picture online, and I am guilty of this too. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, because who TF wants to see posts about someone’s drama all the time?

It’s key to remind yourself to not compare your life to other people’s. Stop asking what they have and start looking at what you do have. Comparing your life constantly is detrimental to your self-esteem. Focus on working on relationships that are important to you. Participate in hobbies you are interested in and meet up with fellow creatives to do one thing: create. All the positives you do in life will come in fruition.

Online Creators Plan Ahead

A lot of people you see on social media have their posts planned ahead. That selfie they just posted or the pretty #OOTD? It was probably from a week ago. Chances are, as they’re posting, their hair is in a bun while dressed in sweatpants. Don’t be fooled by Instagram Stories either. That was probably planned ahead too, especially now that Instagram allows an upload window of more than 24 hours.

Live In the Moment

For me, having a good relationship with social media requires me to be able to live in the moment. I learned quickly that it’s important to be present in conversations with your loved ones. Worry about posting that picture or vlogging your day at another time. There are certain situations that call for your full undivided attention — so open your eyes and live a quality life.


Keep Expectations in Check

Listen, I would love to bang out 2 photos per day on my Insta and 3 posts per week on my blog. At this point in my life, it’s just not feasible due to my busy schedule. I’m only human, so I do get down with myself when I think about how long I’ve let my blog go silent. However, it just calls for better organizing and keeping personal expectations in check.

Ultimately, your relationships offline are more important than what’s online. If you keep that mentality in place, it’ll set social media up as a more positive presence in your daily life.
